Walter Reed National Military Medical Center Commissioning
Having went under a massive consolidation and expansion as part of the Base Realignment and Closure recommendations, the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) is a tri-service military medical center located on the Bethesda, Maryland campus of the former National Naval Medical Center. Necessary to support a new $650 million hospital addition, the existing medical center’s central emergency power system required a significant upgrade in capacity and reliability.
The existing medical center’s emergency power system, located in Building 55 on the NRNMMC campus, was rebuilt to accommodate the additional load of the new hospital addition. A new 10,000 Amp paralleling switchgear was installed to support four (4) new 1,500 kW diesel generators and new fuel oil storage and piping systems. In addition, (27) automatic transfer switches were replaced and seven (7) new transfer switches added. Over the course of four months, Wiley|Wilson performed independent third-party medical center commissioning services for the project and produced a 439 page commissioning report documenting the compliance of the newly rebuilt emergency power system complete with thermal images of each transfer switch in each mode of operation.
Wiley|Wilson’s commissioning report was a prerequisite for the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center receiving certification to operate.
